STUDY ABROAD IN ITALY

Studying abroad in Orvieto, Italy, has given me a new lens through which to analyze cultural context, spatial experience, and material innovation. Immersing myself in the city’s rich history, layered architecture, and deeply rooted traditions has challenged me to think critically about how design evolves over time and how spaces shape human interaction. Walking through Orvieto’s medieval streets, I’ve observed how historic preservation coexists with modern interventions, reinforcing the importance of adaptive reuse and sustainability in design.

Beyond architecture, my experience has been enriched by direct engagement with local artisans, whose craftsmanship highlights the value of material authenticity and skilled labor. Exploring sites like the Duomo di Orvieto and underground Etruscan caves has deepened my appreciation for historical context and spatial storytelling—how materials, light, and proportion come together to create atmospheres that evoke emotion and meaning.

Photography has been a powerful tool in capturing these experiences, allowing me to document the intricate details, textures, and atmospheres that define Orvieto. Through my camera, I have explored the contrast between light and shadow in narrow alleyways, the weathered facades of centuries-old buildings, and the dynamic movement of people in public spaces. Photography has not only helped me preserve these moments but has also refined my eye for composition, perspective, and the ephemeral qualities of space that often go unnoticed.

Additionally, documenting sensory experiences throughout different times of the day has made me more attuned to the dynamic nature of space—how sound, temperature, and movement shift with the rhythm of daily life. Comparing Italian housing and urban design to those in the U.S. has further expanded my perspective on sustainability, density, and communal living.

This global perspective will undoubtedly inform my future design work and broaden my approach to creating impactful spaces. The ability to see beyond my own cultural framework and embrace new ways of thinking will allow me to approach design challenges with greater depth, sensitivity, and creativity.
